This article attempts to examine the project of ‘French-Muslim Algeria’, established by Ismaÿl Urbain, who was a Saint-Simonist staying in Algeria during the early colonization process of France. Although Urbain’s Algerian colonization project is composed of various orientalist ideas, it is true that the discourse of Urbain on the Algerian colonization, distinct from the prevailing colonialist policies of the time, constitutes his own oriental representation based on the Saint-Simonian doctrine favoring the industrial development and the respect of the Muslims. Nevertheless, the discourse of Urbain on the Algeria colonization is related more to the Europeans than to the Algerians considering that the Algerians are generally excluded from his project of the Algerian colonization.
